The theme of solitude and isolation has been a reoccurring topic throughout my work. I want to illustrate thoughts that are uncomfortable and provide metaphors and hints of interest throughout each work of art. I feel accomplished when the viewer spends time contemplating these scenes.

I am compelled to grasp the ideal emotion of happiness. How does one sustain happiness when alone? I juxtapose the theme of solitude and happiness because I want to explore the negative and positive connotations. As you look closer, you understand the subjects are following a destructive path.

I look to film stills and photographs to invent compositions. Influenced by the wide screen aspect ratio of movies, the canvas format is horizontally long and vertically short. Like the artist Edward Hopper, I depict interior settings with one or two figures occupying the space. The figures are not interacting, giving a sense of estrangement and silence. The rooms fill up the majority of the canvas and the figures are carefully situated to generate the focal point. I want to evoke intimate moments in time, usually not seen by others.

People relate to one another by sharing past experiences. I want each observer to have a distinct relationship with the painting. I anticipate the recognized and unfamiliar facets of my painting will be the provoking factor.

When looking at my paintings, do you see a peaceful solitude or an uneasy isolation? Is this a self- reflection or an aesthetic analysis?
